Elderly Persons- Positions in Reality
The various studies found that the position
of the mother varied from that of being the chief authority of the family to
that of being completely subjugated to her husband. But her position as
consultant meant in reality that in most families, she shared the
responsibility of making the major family decisions with the father .The man
relies more and more on his wife’s advice in old age though he may not admit
the fact so readily on account of the ideal of the male superiority over the
female.on the basics of a survey of the elderly widowed (274)and
currently married(242) women, reveals that the elderly widowed are more likely
to live with their children, (than their married counterparts particularly with
their unmarried son(s)). Generally, both the widowed and married women and more
inclined to live with their children when they belong to economically better households.
Living in urban areas tends to increase significantly the likelihood of
co-residence with children among the widowed elderly.
